Sports Wrapups: Dec. 28

Brown Deer boys basketball

When the Brown Deer boys basketball team went inside to junior post player Kierre Ogbonna good things tended to happen Dec. 22 against visiting Wauwatosa West.

He not only scored but also got rebounds and helped the Falcons grab an early 6-0 lead and a 20-15 advantage at the end of the first period.

But then the Falcons largely forgot about post play after that and without a viable perimeter game (no 3-pointers made on the night), the lead evaporated and the Trojans were gradually able to pull away with a 69-59 victory.

"It's a broken record," said Brown Deer co-coach Andy Bauschelt of his team's third loss in a row. "We played well at the start of the game but then we reverted back to what we know, which is street ball and that doesn't bode well when you're trying to win a high school basketball game."

The loss dropped the Falcons to 4-3 in Woodland Conference play and 4-6 overall in their final game of the 2009 portion of the season while West improved to 4-2.

Ogbonna had six of his 18 points in the first quarter and his basket at the 4:07 mark of the second quarter gave the Falcons their last lead of the night at 27-25. After that, the Trojans reeled off 10 points in a row, including six by freshman Anthony Carroll, to take a 35-27 advantage with 1:41 remaining in the half.

It was 37-31 at the break.

The Trojans outscored the Falcons 13-4 over a 4:30 span in the third and fourth quarters to pull away for good. West sank 12 of 17 free throws in the fourth quarter and 20 of 30 overall while the Falcons hit only five of 12 for the game. West forced 21 Falcons turnovers on the night.

Carroll and senior guard Sam Krenzien had 23 apiece to lead West while senior forward Barry Ballinger contributed 11. Ogbonna got help from Jamon Jackson-Wilson and Keone Moore with 12 apiece.

"It's all part of our ups and downs," said Bauschelt. "Sometimes we feel like playing in a system and other times we don't."

Homestead boys basketball

Oconomowoc erased a 27-25 halftime lead by the Highlanders with a 20-12 third quarter effort and then hung on for a 68-63 nonconference win Dec. 22.

With the loss, Homestead fell to 4-2 overall. They host the Chekouras Classic on Dec. 29 and 30.

The Highlanders ran into foul trouble against Oconomowoc, as the Raccoons were 21 of 35 from the foul line as both Bryan Bronaugh and Lamonte Moore fouled out. Homestead was only 10 of 16 from the free throw stripe.

Oconomowoc used balance to overwhelm Homestead, as the Raccoons had five players in double figures led by Tanner Wensman with 16 points. The Highlanders were paced by Dominic Wilder with 18, Coy Smith with 17 and John Laihinen with 13.

Homestead girls basketball

Sussex Hamilton hit the Highlanders with a 17-6 start in the first quarter and then never looked back in a 50-35 decision Dec. 22.

With the defeat, the Highlanders are now off until Jan. 5, when they visit defending NSC co-champs Nicolet for 7:30 p.m. tilt.

Following Hamilton's fast start, Homestead could not rally, as the Chargers extended the advantage to 38-22 at the end of three quarters.

Natalie Sperling led Homestead with 12 points while Siena Mitman and Hannah Young had eight points apiece.

Brown Deer girls basketball

The Wauwatosa West girls basketball team beat Brown Deer, 43-34, Dec. 22 at home and improved their Woodland Conference record to 5-2.

Senior guard Jessica Allemang scored a game-high 15 points and four other Trojans managed five or more points.

Brown Deer only trailed, 33-29, after three quarters, when the West pressure defense put the game away early in the fourth quarter. The Trojans opened the fourth with a 6-0 run to break open the game for good.

Mariah Weddle led Brown Deer with 13 points and 6-2 Ariel Feiertag added 10.

The Falcons will be back in action on Jan. 5, when they host Greendale in a 7:30 p.m. Woodland Conference game.

Shorewood girls basketball

Times remained hard for the Greyhound girls as they were overpowered by Cudahy 55-17, on Dec. 22.

The Greyhounds best quarter was the fourth when they scored eight points. Audrey Peterson had six points and Johanna Odom five for Shorewood. Cudahy hit seven 3-pointers in the game.

Shorewood will host New Berlin Eisenhower in a 7:30 p.m. tilt on Jan. 5.
