Bay's Schultz fourth, Homestead seventh after day one of state golf
Near the top of the individual leaderboard, all grouped together after the first day of the WIAA State Boys Golf Tournament at University Ridge in Madison Monday, was a familiar group of faces.
All from the North Shore Conference, all still in line for medalist honors.
Senior 2007 state champion Jack Schultz of Whitefish Bay and freshman phenom Jordan Niebrugge of Homestead were part of a four-way tie for fourth with 18-hole scores of 72, just one stroke off the lead.
And right behind Schultz and Niebrugge was Homestead senior Casey Barnes, whose 73 was good for a six-way tie for eighth. Nicolet's Aaron Sandock also acquitted himself well, carding a 75, good for a tie for 16th.
Among the leaders were Anthony Archer of Wausau East, Alex Gaugert of Lake Geneva Badger and Steve Sorenson of team leader and defending champion Arrowhead, all of whom carded 71s.
Niebrugge and Barnes helped Homestead to an 18-hole team total of 311 as Arrowhead led the field with a 296 score while Badger (303), Kettle Moraine (304) and Marquette (305) were all still in the hunt.
Other scores for Homestead included Stephen Sullivan at 81, Joe Borawski 85 and Dylan Drozdowicz 92.
The championship round will be held on Tuesday back at University Ridge.
