Bay upsets Marquette in golf regional; sets up sectional showdown
Led by 2007 individual state champion Jack Schultz's sizzling medalist round of 68, the Whitefish Bay boys golf team knocked off Greater Metro Conference champion Marquette by a 305-306 margin to win the 18-hole WIAA regional at Washington County on a soggy Wednesday afternoon.
Schultz had nines of 36 and 32. On that back nine, he recorded four threes (three of them in a row) and five fours. He got support from Andrew Beischel (75), Joey Poehlmann and Danny Umland (81 apiece) and Sam Richtman (85). The team score was a season best by 10 shots.
Other sectional qualifiers included Pius XI in third (347) and Wisconsin Lutheran in fourth (357). The sectional will be on Monday, June 1 at Blackstone Creek (formerly Lake Park) in Germantown. The top two teams and first three individuals not on those teams will advance to the WIAA State Meet.
"For them to beat Marquette has to be a huge boost in their confidence," said Germantown coach Gary Anderson of the Blue Dukes, "or it'll just provide huge incentive for Marquette."
The sectional competition will be fierce, as Homestead, which beat defending champion Bay for the North Shore Conference title last week, won its own regional on Tuesday, recording a 304 mark at Mee-Kwon Country Club. Further, North Shore third-place finisher Nicolet recorded its best score of the season at 309 to also advance.
Both Bay and Homestead qualified for state last season.
"There will be absolutely no margin for error (at sectional)," said Highlander coach Steve O'Brien.
Other sectional qualifiers out of the Mee-Kwon regional included Menomonee Falls (season best 318) and Cedarburg (323).
