Pandl's site to be converted to synagogue
Bayside — Pandl's in Bayside will become the home for Congregation Ahavat Yisrael/The Shul once the sale of the property is completed.
The Village Board on Dec. 17 approved a development agreement and conditional use permit for The Shul. The congregation owns three houses on Pelham Parkway, Brown Deer Road and Rexleigh Drive and originally intended to develop those sites for a synagogue. Those properties will remain residential with the purchase of the former restaurant property, 8825 N. Lake Drive.
Village Manager Andy Pederson said a public hearing on the proposed change in the restaurant brought out several dozen people, many from the congregation and also others interested in learning more about The Shul's plan.
"People were more curious than anything else," he said.
The new agreement with The Shul is almost identical to the previous one.
The Shul will make a payment in lieu of taxes to the village, and it will be allowed to open at 6:45 a.m. instead of 8 a.m. for early morning services, according to Village Attorney Chris Jaekels. Closing is at 10 p.m.
