Selig buys house next door, plans to combine properties

Old house to be used for training by police and fire departments, MATC

March 25, 2009

Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig bought and plans to raze the house next door to his Bayside home to enlarge his property and to plant a garden.

Before he tears it down, however, Selig has offered to allow several groups to use the house for training purposes.

Several months ago, Selig bought a 1.6-acre property in the 1400 block of East Standish Place assessed in August at $585,700 for the house and land. The house, assessed at $371,600, was built in 1961, according to Bayside records.

The Architectural Review Committee has approved the demolition. The Plan Commission on March 18 recommended approval by the Village Board of the request to combine Selig's current 1.35-acre property with the new one he purchased, which would more than double the size of his property.

Selig's current property is assessed at $1.2 million with the house alone at $969,300.

Mark Brick, owner of B&E General Contractors Inc. of Glendale, which is handling the project, said he is working with Milwaukee Area Technical College officials to enable about 30 carpentry students to practice on the house. They will do things such as remove and install cabinetry, windows, casings and trim, and disconnect plumbing to sinks and vanities, he said.

The students are slated to be at the house Tuesday and Wednesday, April 21 and 22.

Selig also offered use of the home to Bayside police, who have expressed interest in using it for training in how to enter a home with a burglar inside, Brick said. Police are thinking of using paintball guns in the training, which would take place the first week of May, he said.

Then, the North Shore Fire Department is slated to take over using the house for practice.
