SCHOOLSCENE

Kevin Ballecer, a sixth-grade student at Glen Hills, won the school-level competition of the National Geographic Bee on Dec. 17 and a chance at a $25,000 college scholarship. The school-level bee was the first round in the 21st annual National Geography Bee sponsored by the National Geographic Society. He will now take a written test; up to 100 of the top scorers in each state will be eligible to compete in their state bee on April 3.

Alexander Rofes of Shorewood, a senior at University School of Milwaukee, recently was named one of more than 3,000 candidates in the 2009 Presidential Scholars Program. Candidates are selected based on superior academic and artistic achievements, leadership qualities, strong character, and school and community involvement. Semifinalists will be chosen in April.
