Tom Forke of Mequon made the spring semester honors list at Concordia University, Nebraska, in Seward.

Kaitlin Adams of Shorewood and Logan Bartz of Whitefish Bay, nursing students at Marquette University in Milwaukee, are studying abroad in Piura, Peru, this summer. In Piura, the students will gain community clinical experience at a Catholic parish called Sacramento Santisimo and will develop a global view of healthcare by being immersed in a new culture.

YOURNEIGHBORS

Sixteen alumni of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee who have distinguished themselves through outstanding achievements in their careers and civic involvement have been named recipients of the 2012 UWM Alumni Association awards, including Laurel Bear of Fox Point, winner of the Distinguished Alumnus Award. Bear is a pediatric specialist who became a pediatric hospitalist (specializing in the care of hospitalized children) before the term was officially used. Bear received her doctorate in medicine from the Medical College of Wisconsin in 1984, after earning her bachelor's degree in medical science at UWM. Exposure to medically fragile babies at St. Joseph Hospital in Milwaukee led Bear to work at MCW, where she manages the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit developmental follow-up program and created the first program in the nation to focus on follow-up for babies requiring heart surgery prior to their first birthday. Bear has served with the Harry & Rose Samson Family Jewish Community Center's Steve and Shari Sadek Family Camp Interlaken, the Nicolet School District and the Global Medical Brigade. Her husband, Brian Bear, is winner of the 2011 UWM Alumni Association Citizenship Award and a practicing OB/GYN whom Laurel Bear met while both were attending UWM.
