Fine Arts program at Weyenberg Library tonight

Mequon - Ray Kehm, docent from the Milwaukee Art Museum, presents an audio-visual presentation on the Museum's 2010 exhibit of the year, Street Seen: The Psychological Gesture in American Photography, 1940-1959, at 6:30 p.m. at the Weyenberg Library, 11345 N. Cedarburg Road. The presentation provides an in-depth look at six photographers - Lisette Model, Louis Faurer, Ted Croner, Saul Leiter, William Klein, and Robert Frank - active during the 40s and 50s whose work is grounded in the emotional and dramatic changes of that era. The presentation is participatory, and the audience is encouraged to ask questions and make their own observations.

This program is free and open to all.

Free family fun night Friday at Logemann Community Center

Artist from area part of gallery exhibit

Fox Point - The artistic works of Stritch alumni Anna (Fieldbinder) Kordsmeier and Sue (Goetz) Lawton will be on display in the Northwestern Mutual Art Gallery Feb. 26 to March 26. The opening reception is from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday. Kordsmeier is a 2001graduate of Nicolet High School who received her BFA from Cardinal Stritch University in 2005.

Both artists incorporate mixed media into their acrylic paintings.

Kordsmeier's abstract topographies investigate the elusive and impermanent quality of memory.

Lawton's "Tibia: Imagery from the Modern Opera" is based on an opera parody she wrote shortly after the 2004 presidential election. The story is meant to playfully poke fun at both 19th century romantic opera and 21st century politics.

School foundation holds annual fundraiser

Fox Point - The 2010 Almost Spring Fling Taste of Wisconsin will be held on Saturday at Cardinal Stritch's Sister Camille Kliebhan Conference Center. Join the Foundation for an evening of Wisconsin-inspired cheer to include good fun, groovy music and great food. The evening starts at 5:30 p.m. with hors d'oeuvres and a silent auction. The Wisconsin-themed dinner will be served at 7:30 p.m. Come sample Wisconsin brewed beers and locally made sodas at the tasting booth. A live auction and raffle drawings will begin at 8 p.m.

The celebration continues with dancing beginning at 9 p.m.

Diamond Dancer auditions to be held at North Shore Elite

Glendale - Auditions for the 2010 Diamond Dancers who perform at the Milwaukee Brewers games just before the National Anthem and during the seventh inning stretch, will be held Saturday at North Shore Elite Sports Club, 5750 N. Glen Park Road.

Registration begins at 10:30 a.m. and the audition at 11 a.m.

Parenting group hosting annual breakfast fundraiser

Mequon-Thiensville - Positive Parent Involvement of Mequon-Thiensville is hosting their annual fundraiser breakfast beginning at 8:45 a.m. Friday at the Four Points Sheraton in Brown Deer, east of Green Bay Road. The featured speaker, Mike McGowan, will address the issue Parenting the Wireless Generation. This entertaining and thought provoking address focuses on the challenges and opportunities of parenting the generations brought up on iPods, game systems, and cell phones.

Michael McGowan is President of McGowan and Associates, a training and consulting firm specializing in alcohol, drug, conflict resolution, workplace and family issues.

In addition to breakfast, there will be a Basket Raffle and an auction. All funds raised or donated will be used to fund speakers and activities for the Mequon-Thiensville School District students, as well as for information disbursement to the parents of MTSD students and faculty.

Shorewood candidate forums planned

Shorewood - The Shorewood Men's Club will hold candidate forums for both the School Board and Village Board races at Hubbard Park Lodge, 3565 N. Morris Blvd. The School Board candidate forum will be March 3, and the Village Board candidate forum will be March 17.

All are welcome to join the Men's Club for dinner (starting at 6:30 p.m.) and the forum at 7 p.m.

Spend Wednesday afternoon at a free movie

Mequon - The Weyenberg Library is pleased to present a Best Picture film series, featuring Academy-Award winning films at 1 p.m. Wednesdays.

The 1973 winner, "The Sting," will be shown March 3, and winner "Million Dollar Baby" on March 10. The series concludes with 1983 winner "Terms of Endearment" on March 17.

Films will be projected in the Tolzman Community Room and are free of charge to all members of the public. Police Department holds next Citizens Police Academy

Mequon - The Police Department. is holding its next Citizens Police Academy starting March 4.

The academy, which is free, meets for six Thursdays from 6 to 9 p.m.

This program helps educate residents on how police officers do their jobs and serve their community, and how important and critical civilian involvement is in aiding those services.

Most classes involve "role playing and scenarios" with students experiencing topics including the detection of illegal drugs, operating while intoxicated, traffic stops, simulations of room clearing, the use of a Taser and canine Officer Vero doing his job.

In addition, they are given the opportunity to qualify on a firearms range directed by the department's trained firearms instructor.

Enrollment is limited to 20 people who must be 18 or older and residents of Mequon or Thiensville or employees working in those communities.

Whitefish Bay High School presents 'Guys and Dolls'

Whitefish Bay - The Whitefish Bay High School Theatre Department will present five performances of the musical "Guys and Dolls" at 7:30 p.m. March 5, 6, 12 and 13 and at 2 p.m. March 7 in the high school auditorium, 1200 E. Fairmount Ave.

Tickets are $10 for adults, $7 for students and seniors, $5 for children. All tickets are general seating and the ticket booth will open an hour and a half before each performance.

Ben Seidman to perform magic show at JCC

Whitefish Bay - Ben Seidman, Shorewood native and resident magician at the Manadalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas will be performing at the Harry & Rose Samson Family Jewish Community Center, 6255 N. Santa Monica Blvd at 7 p.m. March 6. The event is a fundraiser for the Milwaukee Jewish Day School, Ben's alma mater.

Seidman is the creator of the best-selling 2008 magic DVD, "iVanish", and magic consultant on Criss Angel's A&E network show, "Mindfreak." In addition to Seidman's stand-up magic show, there will be a silent auction, prizes, and dessert reception.

Village to hold two open houses for Comprehensive Plan

Shorewood - The Village Board, Plan Commission and village staff will discuss residents' thoughts and input on a proposed comprehensive plan being developed for the community. The plan will help guide the future development of the village.

Drop in sessions will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. March 6 and 6 to 8 p.m. March 10 in the Village Center, the lower level of Shorewood Library, 3920 N. Murray Ave.

Seasonal and swine flu vaccines available at clinics

The North Shore Health Department will be providing both seasonal and swine flu (H1N1) vaccinations during its monthly immunization clinics. Vaccination is the best defense against both H1N1 and seasonal influenza.

Although H1N1 influenza activity has decreased, seasonal and H1N1 influenza viruses are expected to continue circulating for months. Vaccination is recommended throughout the influenza season, including the spring months.

CRG to hold candidate forum

Brown Deer - The Brown Deer affiliate of the Citizens for Responsible Government will hold a forum for School Board candidates at 10 a.m. March 6 at the Brown Deer High School Multicultural Arts Center.

Four candidates, incumbent Gary Williams and Michael Bembenek, Barry Godshaw and Lisa Zielinski, are running for two vacant seats on the board.

Glendale Woman's Club holding a fashion show

Glendale - The Glendale Woman's Club presents the Simple Elegance Fashion Show with doors opening at 10:30 a.m. March 11 at the Bavarian Inn, 700 W. Lexington Blvd. The opening event is a treasure hunt

Thiensville-Mequon Library League holding book sale

Mequon - The Thiensville-Mequon Library League is having a March Madness Book Sale on March 13 and 14 at the Logemann Community Center, 6100 W. Mequon Road.. A large variety of new and used books will be available for $1 or less. Hundreds of rare and collectable books will also be featured at reasonable prices. Hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on March 13 and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 14. Proceeds benefit the Mequon-Thiensville Education Foundation, the Ozaukee County Jail Literacy Program, the Logemann Community Center and other local charities.

SANC to celebrate 'Snake Patrick's Day'

School holds 26th Annual Shamrock fundraiser at Ozaukee Country Club

Mequon - Lumen Christi Catholic School's popular fundraiser, Shamrock, will take place March 20 at Ozaukee Country Club, 10823 N. River Road. This will mark the26th anniversary of Shamrock. More than $2 million dollars have been raised for the school since Shamrock was first introduced.

This year's theme is A Tropical Evening Awaits You. The festivities begin at5:30 p.m. with tropically-inspired cocktails and appetizers, raffles and a silent auction. A buffet dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m., featuring delicious tropical fare. The live auction begins at 9:15 p.m. There are many amazing auction items, including a vacation home in Vail, Colo., for six days and five nights; front row pew for the 4 p.m. Christmas Eve Mass at Lumen Christi Mequon, including two parking spaces; and a Brewers game and tailgate party with the Rev. Peter Berger, just to name a few. In addition, our schoolchildren have created beautiful glass fusion projects for the silent auction - they are priceless.

Shorewood flea market seeks vendors

Shorewood - The sixth annual Shorewood Community Flea Market will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 15 at the Shorewood Village Center in the basement of the Shorewood Library, 3920 N. Murray Avenue.

Vendors can rent a table for $15. No clothes will be accepted. Past vendors have sold items such as plants, knitting wool, books, vases, small appliances and knickknacks.

AARP Foundation offers income tax help

Free tax help is offered at the Whitefish Bay and Shorewood libraries. The Whitefish Bay site, 5420 N. Marlborough Drive, will be open every Wednesday from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., beginning Feb.3 and running through April 14. This is a walk-in program, with taxpayers helped on a first-come basis.

The Shorewood program runs by appointment-only on Thursday afternoons at the library, 3920 N. Murray Ave. Appointments are made by calling the Shorewood Health Department, (414) 847-2710.

This TaxAide program is funded by the AARP Foundation, with support from the IRS and is available to taxpayers of all ages. The program cannot offer assistance with certain less common returns, such as those involving rental real estate, married-filing-separately status, military and other complex issues.

There is no income limitation.

High school throws fundraiser for H2O Foundation

Whitefish Bay - A Samudra Fashion Show at Whitefish Bay High School Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. March 26 will benefit H2O which provides clean water wells in third world countries. The show will feature local and student fashion.

SHOP, a boutique, and Lise and Katos will contribute cutting-edge fashion trends alongside original student designs.

Samudra comes from the word ocean in Hindi and was chosen as the shows name because the shows proceeds will benefit Whitefish Bay's goal with H2O. The high school is more than one-third of the way to reaching their goal of completing the water project in their partner school in India for clean, safe water.

Come enjoy the fashion, and help them reach their goal.

Cinema, Alliance Francaise brings French films to theater

Mequon - Marcus Theatres will be teaming with the Alliance Francaise of Milwaukee to bring Best French-Language Film Shorts of 2009 to the North Shore Cinema on March 27. Les Lutins du Court-Metrage has been named the cream-of-the-crop of French short films. Many of these films are not generally available to the general public, so this is a unique and cultural experience for Milwaukee-area residents to enjoy.
