What wildlife have you spotted this spring?

May 7, 2009

Our readers and photographers have been taking photos of wildlife this spring, from goslings and their parent Canada geese along the Milwaukee River Parkway in Wauwatosa, to adolescent deer casually trotting across the lawns of Whitefish Bay houses, to a pair of nesting eagles living near Big Muskego Lake in Muskego.

What animals have you spotted this season?

My dog flushed a turkey yesterday while I was walking her in a field in the north side of West Allis. First turkey I'd ever seen in Milwaukee County.

How's this for wildlife? There is a dead, completely flattened squirrel laying on the sidewalk in front of 1311/1313 Kensington in Shorewood. It's been there for weeks. Hey neighbor, clean up your yard!

I saw a robin on my lawn the other day. Actually, that might have been last year. Nevermind.

May is my favorite time of year for walking through our parks. Our parks are bursting in color right now, with the spring flowers and the colorful birds. The warblers are migrating to town in peak numbers. In fact, every Sunday at 8 am in May, Betsy Abert from South Milwaukee leads a warbler walk through Grant Park and neighboring parks. It's amazing the birds you will see. I love it. If anyone is interested, it starts at the WiloWay entrance of Grant Park.

We see lots of wildlife around here. Lots of deer, bunnies, squirrels, chipmunks...the "typical" things one sees in Spring/Summer. However, our faves are the hawks that live in our trees as well as a pair of Cardinals, mourning doves that we hear every morning/evening, and a woodchuck that lives in our neighbor's backyard woodpile!

The usual--raccoons, ducks and baby ducks, deer, opossums, voles, squirrels, garter snakes, bunniesbunniesbunnies. I've been watching a pair of great horned owl babies and their mom for a couple months. And the other day I saw a lone coyote in broad daylight.

Red-tail Fox, turkey, racoon and deer were all spotted last week on our street. The deer and racoon are common, but the fox and turkey are rare. Very cool to see!

I saw my first "urban" fox crossing the street on the East Side of Milwaukee the other day. I thought I was seeing things at first, but it looked right at me - definitely a fox. (Then I did a check - yes, I was still in Milwaukee - not Fox Point ;)) Unfortunately, a few days before that, I also saw my first rat, leaving the breakwater by Bradford Beach during a heavy rain. YUCK. I'm glad I was safely shielded in my car!!!

Whitnall park: the usual deer, although I don't consider them to be truly "wild" in the sense of the word. I did see a coyote the other day just south of Grange, on the parkway. My daughter's boyfriend is kind of wild. I see him every day.

Turkeys driving wildly, badgering for front position, causing others to duck out of their way like skittish field mice. They can also be quite foxy and or bullish. The tortoise and hare game plays out at most stoplights: ow'll bet apes could drive better than those monkeys. Humans are wilder than wildlife.

We have a turkey nest somewhere nearby. She comes out to stroll every once in a while. We also have a fox who visits often. The deer are like rabbits in our neighborhood, just bigger, too many to count.

Our neighbor is feeding the local wildlife. As a result, we have seen wild turkeys and deer destroy our yard, which we have worked very hard over many years to improve. The raccoons she was feeded destroyed our basement window while nesting in the window well. Any kind of rodent (mouse, squirrel, chipmunk) has multiplied exponentially.

We've seen deer, 13 lined ground squirrels (NOT chipmunks!), wild turkeys, cranes, a few rabbits, red-tailed hawks, sharp-shinned hawks, racoons and toads just in our neighboring yards this spring. Still on the lookout for some foxes we usually see around this time also.

I wasn't sure what I saw late one night running through my backyard, but after doing some research I determined it was a river otter. My husband wasn't buying it, but then about 2 weeks later he saw two dart across our street and we live a good 10 city blocks from the Menomonee River. Since they had ventured so far from the river they were completely dry and had cute fuzzy brown fur.

By Appleton Ave. near 107th, I was startled to see a turkey flying over my car. I heard a thunk as it made contact, but I saw it land safely on the grassy roadside. There were no scratched on top of my car so I concluded it hit the antenna. Also saw a turkey on the road to Holy Hill the same day. Have seen lots of roadkill, oppossums and other things I can't identify, one with whitish fir. Geese of course, and a duck couple walk around the subdivision, too. One goldfinch so far, and the usual other more common birds, seen also.

I spotted coyotes several times this summer. I saw one running down KK & Crawford a few weeks ago-shocked that it seemed calm as can be on a pretty busy street. Saturday morning, two of them were strolling down the sidewalk in front of my house. They seem to live in the land that WE Energies owns. WHY isn't the city trapping these? Are we waiting for a small dog to get killed first?
