June 22, 2010 11:20 a.m. | The Nicolet School Board last night finalized raises and benefits for four groups of employees, but will file for arbitration in an effort to hammer out a contract with the teachers union.
District Administrator Rick Monroe said filing for arbitration will keep the district and union working on a settlement through the summer months, rather than putting it off until the fall.
In a written statement, Monroe said that filing for arbitration now might result in a contract by fall. Monroe said the district and union were close to a settlement during their mediation session and he hopes the contract will be settled soon.
Under the arbitration process, the district files a preliminary final offer. Monroe said that offer will be consistent with the salaries and benefits for administrators and confidential employees, and for members of the custodians' and food service employees unions.
The board last night agreed to an average 2 percent wage increase for 2009-10 and 2010-11 for all of those employee groups. All of those employees agreed to a change in health insurance, from the WEA Trust Select Plan to the WEA Trust Preferred Plan.

June 21, 2010 11:14 p.m. | West Bend West baseball coach Bill Albrecht is a cautious but prideful man.
So in his team's fast one-loss start, he sees nothing surprising, but he did allow himself a large sigh of relief when his Spartans bolted to a 4-1 lead and then held on for a 5-3 win at defending North Shore Conference champion Nicolet Monday night.
The victory gave West a season sweep of its rivals the Knights and more importantly a two-game lead in the NSC.
"You never expect to that against this program, not with the talent they run through here," he said. "It's a solid program, so this isn't expected. I know we lost some good ballplayers last year, but we still expected good things. I think some people underestimated us."
Knight coach Dick Sykes knows better than that, as his experienced team lost leverage against West and fell to 13-6 overall. His biggest concern was the bottom of the order, which could not generate any spark against West starter and winner Dylan Hinkley.

June 15, 2010 12:42 p.m. | A 16-year-old River Hills boy charged with dressing like a ninja and attacking teenager with a machete in a wooded area behind Nicolet High School will be allowed to go home, a judge ruled today.
The suspect has been held first in secure detention and more recently in a secure shelter following the incident April 27.
The victim of the attack, a 14-year-old Bayside boy, and three other boys went into the woods seeking a person dressed like a ninja who allegedly had confronted two girls who were in the woods the previous day.
The victim was briefly separated from his companion when there was a confrontation between him and the suspect, who was clearing brush on a private property. The boy required 20 stitches to close a wound over his eye.
Children's Court Judge Frederick Rosa on today released the boy to the custody of his parents, warning him that any violation of restrictions placed on his release would result in his return to secure detention.

June 10, 2010 11:33 p.m. | Timing is everything in life.
Just ask Whitefish Bay forward Abby Starker, who happened to be in the right place at the right time Thursday in the WIAA sectional semifinal game the Blue Dukes hosted.
Just 28 seconds into overtime against border rival Nicolet, Bay midfielder Kelsey Corrigan launched a long bomb of a shot from the right side. The ball carried high and long in the cool, wet night air and struck the crossbar of the goal squarely.
It came down right at the feet of Starker, who was scarcely five yards in front of the Knight goal and she wasted no time in popping the shot in to decide the physical, hotly-contested game, 2-1.
"I mean, it was right there," said Starker. "I just hit it with my right foot and it went in."
