By MARY BUCKLEY

July 29, 2010 3:22 p.m. | Registration for falls classes at Nicolet High School has been pushed back about a week because of the flooding damage at the school

Registration has been changed from Aug. 18 to 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 24.

All forms returned related to the school district, high school and Nicolet Recreation Department that need to be returned to Nicolet can be dropped off at Glen Hills Middle School, 2600 W. Mill Road, until further notice. That school is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

For updates on how flooding is affecting the school, visit the Nicolet website at nicolet.k12.wi.us. You may also call (414) 351-1700 to leave a message for staff at the school and Recreation Department.

Nicolet High School cleanup photo gallery now online

July 27, 2010 4:32 p.m. | Nicolet High School is a hotbed of cleanup activity as district officials and workers are drying out the school and assessing damage in the wake of last week's torrential storms that caused flooding throughout the area.

We've just posted a photo gallery that highlights some of their efforts, which include transporting damaged computers to nearby Cardinal Stritch and funneling air into the school.

After the flood: Nicolet officials hopeful school will be ready Sept. 1

By MARY BUCKLEY

July 27, 2010 11:18 a.m. | Nicolet School District officials and Paul Davis Restoration believe they can have the high school ready for students on Sept. 1. Officials hope part of the building can be open Aug. 18 for student registration but at this point can't say definitively that will happen.

About 80 percent of the high school was hit by flood waters during the heavy rains July 22.

J. Murphy of Paul Davis National said the effect of the flooding becomes more apparent with each passing day as contaminants from the water begin to cause odors and mold. The company has been at the school since Friday morning, first pumping all standing water out of the building and then methodically assessing damage and starting the process to sanitize all areas that were hit by flooding.

The school district hired an independent industrial hygienist to oversee the clean up. The hygienist will monitor the building for spores and contaminants and develop tests to make sure the clean up is successful.

With fall sports programs scheduled to begin the second week of August and with several Nicolet Recreation programs still on the summer schedule, the district is encouraging residents to use the Nicolet website for updated information.

Flood severely damages Jewish Community Pantry

Grafton's Fisk stymies Nicolet batters, 1-0, in sectional final

By Steven L. Tietz

July 24, 2010 10:27 p.m. | A major league draft choice of the Milwaukee Brewers and possessor of an 87-mile-an-hour fastball, Grafton pitcher Conor Fisk is obviously an athlete of some proportion.

And he demonstrated that on two occasions in the late innings of the Blackhawks' 1-0 WIAA sectional final upset of top-seeded Nicolet Saturday afternoon in Cedarburg.

The first came in the bottom of the sixth, when Grafton was trying desperately to hold onto its lead. The Knights (25-12) loaded the bases with one out on an error, an infield single and a walk, but Fisk, who didn't allow the hard-hitting Nicolet squad an extra base hit all day, induced a hard chopper which he leaped to field.

He immediately turned and fired to his catcher who quickly stepped on the plate for the force and then whipped the ball over to first for an electrifying inning-ending doubleplay.

"In that situation, all I was trying to do was get out of that mess allowing one run or hopefully less," Fisk said. "I knew I had to get the job done. I was focused on strikeouts, but once I got that ball (on the chopper), I knew what to do with it."

Nicolet drops sectional final to Grafton in pitchers' duel

July 24, 2010 3:28 p.m. | Grafton got a nine-strikeout, three-walk performance from Milwaukee Brewers draft pick Conor Fisk and defeated Nicolet 1-0 Saturday afternoon in a WIAA sectional final at Cedarburg.

Grafton scratched out an unearned run in the fourth inning for the only run of the game.

Nicolet's best scoring chance occurred in the bottom of the sixth, when the Knights loaded the bases with one out. But Fisk induced a 1-2-3 double play to end the inning.

Nicolet also had two runners on base with two outs in the seventh inning, but Fisk ended the game with a strikeout.

Nicolet's Max Kramsky allowed only three hits in throwing the complete game. He had four strikeouts and four walks.

The winner of today's game advances to the state quarterfinals, beginning Wednesday in Stevens Point.

Nicolet advanced with an 11-1 victory over Whitefish Bay and Grafton earned its spot with a 4-2 victory over Brown Deer.

Nicolet and Grafton advance to WIAA baseball sectional final

By Steven L. Tietz

July 23, 2010 8:26 p.m. | Though a large chunk of the school was still flooded, the Nicolet baseball team kept its eyes on the prize in the rain-delayed WIAA sectional at Cedarburg on Friday, as the Knights used Sam Kohnke's strong pitching and clutch two-run homer to overpower rival Whitefish Bay, 11-1, in a semifinal contest.

With the win, the Knights (25-11) advanced to a WIAA sectional final back at Cedarburg at 11 a.m. Saturday against Grafton (20-9), which took a gamble and won when it did not pitch ace and Milwaukee Brewers' draft choice Conor Fisk in its 4-2 semifinal win over Brown Deer later that day.

That means the Knights will face the 90-mile an hour flamethrower for the first time in 2010. Nicolet has won both previous meetings with Grafton this season, but in neither instance did the Knights have to face Fisk, who has 138 strikeouts against just 23 walks this summer.

"It'll be interesting," said Knight coach Dick Sykes. "We're dead fastball hitters and he's a power pitcher."

Nicolet beat the four-year letterwinner Fisk four straight times in his sophomore and junior years combined.

Nicolet High School about 80 damaged, official says

By MARY BUCKLEY

July 23, 2010 11:44 a.m. | Nicolet School District Administrator Rick Monroe estimates 80 percent of Nicolet High School was damaged by flooding during last night's storm. A line at about the three-foot level marked the high water mark on outside doors.

"When I got here last night, rain was just pouring down Jean Nicolet Road," Monroe said. The rain pooled in the horseshoe area outside the east entrance to the high school, spurting between and under the outside doors, he said.

Cleaning crews swept water from floors in most of the building this morning as a big mop up begins.

Half an inch to more than 6 inches of water was evident in the school corridors and in the theater. Lower levels of the building, such as the areas under the stage and the boys' locker room, had more water in them and could not yet be accessed. Monroe said there was as much as six feet of water in the lower level when the flooding was at its worst.

The flood waters did not touch either the D or F wing libraries, both under construction. They remained dry and contractors, with the help of a portable generator, were continuing to work on their renovation.
