What is your plan for maintaining and not gaining weight over the next few months? If you are like the rest of us, you will probably put on a few pounds from all the holiday festivities and feasts. And, unfortunately, those few pounds will probably stick with us until the next holidays when we add a couple more. Thus begins the self-destructive cycle.
But, guess what? It doesn’t have to be that way. Make a personal pledge now to “Maintain Don’t Gain” during the weeks between Thanksgiving and New Years. That’s only six short weeks and something we can all do if we set our minds to it.
Here are a few tips to help:
- Don’t feel guilty about what you eat but do watch what you eat. The holidays shouldn’t be a free pass to eat whatever you want. Enjoy your favorites, just don’t overdo it. Pay attention to portion size and be sure to leave room for a sensible portion of your favorite dessert.
- Include healthy food choices when planning menus and don’t starve yourself before a holiday celebration. Skipping meals or healthy snacks often leads to overindulgence later. And remember to count the calories in your drink choices. Alcohol and eggnog have lots of empty calories.
- Stay active. Being active is your best weapon against holiday stress and weight gain. What a great time of year for a brisk walk with or without the family. If your goal is to maintain, the more active you are the more you can treat yourself to holiday goodies (within reason).
- Have fun! Be sure to really enjoy the holiday season and don’t make your weight the focus. Making some thoughtful choices should help you maintain and not gain.
Decide today that you will do all you can to "maintain and not gain" weight over the holidays. You certainly won't regret the effort. After all, can you imagine any better way to start the New Year?
