Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office Emergency Management Coordinates Flood Damage Reporting with Milwaukee County 2-1-1
***Milwaukee County Citizens Can Call 2-1-1 to Report Storm Damage***
Milwaukee, WI - As a result of yesterday’s torrential rainstorm, the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office Emergency Management Bureau has coordinated with Milwaukee County 2-1-1, for citizens to report weather-related damages. Please call 2-1-1 to report flood damage beginning at 8:00 a.m. Friday morning. This is not an emergency response number. This is a call system for citizens to speak with a 2-1-1 operator to report if you have flood or severe storm damage your property. We are asking for citizens to be patient when calling, due to anticipated high call volume.
Please be prepared to provide the following information:
1) Contact name and phone number
2) Address of damaged property
3) Name of property owner or renter
4) Type of damage: flooding or sewer backup or severe storm
5) Brief description of damage and estimated dollar amount
6) Percentage of damage covered by insurance
All information obtained will be used to complete a damage assessment for Milwaukee County. Upon completion of the damage assessment, the results will be provided. We will make a public announcement via the media if federal or state disaster aid becomes available.

The International City/County Management Association (ICMA) has selected the Village of Bayside to receive its 2010 Community Sustainability Award. The Community Sustainability Award recognizes innovative local government programs or processes that demonstrate innovation, excellence, and success in balancing that community's social, economic, environmental, and cultural needs. This award is given to one community of less than 10,000 in population internationally.
Bayside is being recognized for its’ Measuring Green program, which involves the implementation of its innovative, best management practices, and comprehensive performance measurement program in the area of sustainability. The Village has undertaken several core “Green” initiatives to enhance the energy efficiency of its facilities and operations, promote environmental stewardship in the community, and provide leadership in enhancing our environmental friendliness. The approach has been multi-faceted and included Green building, Village operational and procedural, community, regulatory and communication initiatives.
While Bayside’s Measuring Green has several “Green” components, two areas that were specifically highlighted and recognized were the Facility Energy Consumption Reduction Initiative and Collection Services Efficiency Enhancement Initiative.
Since 2007, Village facility utility consumption has dropped dramatically through a series of best practices that were implemented. Electrical consumption in Village facilities has reduced by 26 percent. Village gas consumption has reduced by 77 percent. Overall Village utility costs have reduced by 21 percent.
The second initiative was the Village’s implementation of a comprehensive collection efficiency measurement initiative. Part of this program benchmarked the number of hours the Village’s Department of Community & Utility Services spent annually on collection-oriented services (garbage, recycling and yard waste). The shift in resources and manpower resulted in a reduction of over 2,700 hours on collections annually, approximately 30 percent, and a savings of almost $97,000. This has provided crews the opportunity to spend more time completing preventive maintenance work, which helps prolong the life span of village roads, tools and heavy equipment; which ultimately will save taxpayers money in the long-run and frees up budgetary resources to be spent on other projects.
The award will be presented to the Village this fall. This recognition comes on the heels of the Village being designated the Milwaukee Business Journal’s Green Community of the Year in 2009.

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation continues preparations for the reconstruction of the Brown Deer Road bridge over Interstate-43. The Brown Deer Road bridge construction is expected to begin Monday, February 8 and continue through December.
Motorists should expect significant traffic backups throughout the construction zone, at the intersection of Brown Deer Road and Port Washington Road, as well as east of the intersection on Brown Deer Road west bound. If possible, motorists should modify travel patterns to avoid this area. Motorists are encouraged to use the Port Washington Road on/off ramps or Lake Drive as alternate routes. The Bayside Police Department will be assisting with traffic control.
Temporary stop lights are currently being installed on the east and west side of the bridge at the on/off ramps. Work will begin with the demolition of the west bound bridge. One lane in each direction on Brown Deer Road will remain open during the project. Over the course of the project there will be total freeway closures for demolition of the old bridge. Additional traffic restrictions will occur 9 am to 2 pm Monday through Thursday, 8 pm to 5 am Monday through Thursday, 9 am to 12 pm Fridays, and 10 pm to 8 am on weekends. There should be minimal disruption to I-43 traffic except for the total closures and installation of barriers north and south of the bridge which may cause some lane narrowing or spot closures.
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation will also be have both the Good Hope and Green Tree bridges over I-43 under construction as well. Questions regarding the construction on the Brown Deer Road bridge and interchange project can be sent to the Field Project Manager, Frank Rivera.
