Each baby born in the United States has a label of "M" or "F" attached to him/her. Of course that stands for Masculine or Feminine. And from those few earliest moments of life, that baby is channeled --often forced-- along a path of expected behaviors that relate to those letters, M or F. No matter that each baby has inherent and genetic make-ups that do not necessarily follow that "pre-scribed" story-line. Each baby is unique from the first moment of life. Each baby has an in-bred road map to follow, but often detoured by society's shallow demands.
Current harrassments of young people by others is a growing concern. Hazing of one sort or another now has new places to exhibit its bigotry, hatred, shallowness, ignorance, etc.: the computer world. It is not enough that kids are bullied at school, or on the playground, or walking to and from school, etc. Now the bigots can do it via various cyber-means.
Of course there are the common bullying targets like obesity or some outstanding physical feature. But although we went through the struggle of open housing, open schools, etc., today we still have too great of an abundance of bigotry related to racism. But there are always other things that some narrow-minded group in society must try to make a point of vulnerability: race, height, religion, skin color, dress, or any of a myriad of things that society insists must be done a certain way.
Bigotry is often taught in the home. "The other" becomes the brunt of criticism in the home. Bigotry abounds.
Add to the above, those children and adults who have a certain sexual orientation, and voila!, out come the bigots to criticize, judge, or single out in some way. Far too often, some crazed and distorted religious or biblical reference is used to try and justify bigotry. The most extreme bigots in the South often proudly struttled their fundamental Christian principles. This sort of twisted, distorted, and prejudicial perspective exists today, and cyber-bullying allows these bigots to hide in new ways.
It is up to each of us to confront this sort of hatred and ignorance when it rears its ugly face in our society.
The over-riding principles in just about every major religious writings exhibit examples of love, peace, tolerance, understanding, compassion, empathy, etc. Bigots are not examples of these basic principles, bigots are anathema to them.
As we walk along in society amidst religious symbols and ideals, each of us should feel called upon to show our face as civilized, humane, understanding, tolerant human beings. Otherwise the holiday hoopla is a sham, a scam, a disgusting lie. Bigotry has no place in a civilized society.
Show who you are as a human being.
"The prejudices of ignorance are more easily removed than the prejudices of interest; the first are blindly adopted, the second willfully preferred." -George Bancroft
"Individuals having no religious affiliation show on the average less prejudice than do church members." -Gordon W. Allport
